Mine Action [1]
The UNMAS mandate is to:
- deploy experts in land mines activities to determine the actual scope of pollution from mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),
- coordinate the establishment of landmine activities
- develop an action plan
- ensure the conduct of emergency land mine action
Following this resolution, UNMAS developed a land mine programme to help MONUC fulfill its mandate; an integrated Mine Action Coordination Center was then established within MONUC in February 2002.
The following are the four pillars that underpin the implementation of the mandate:
- Support to MONUC through land mine action before its deployment
- Definition of area of implementation for land mine action / issue of remaining war explosives in the country
- Initiate and coordinate humanitarian land mine operations
- Support Government during de-mining operations and land mine activities
The UN Mine Action Coordination Center in the Democratic Republic of Congo is made up of a national office based in Kinshasa and three regional offices in Kisangani, Goma, Lubumbashi and Kisangani.
