Based on a report indicating an imminent attack near Kasenyi market (some 50 kilometers east of Bunia, Ituri), MONUC dispatched a military patrol to the spot on Wednesday in order to verify the facts and prevent any deterioration of the security situation.
When the MONUC patrol arrived at Kasenyi, militiamen fled, firing on the patrol and injured a military officer.
MONUC immediately conducted cordon-and-search operations during which it found weapons in a house and arrested 13 members of still unidentified militia, some of them armed with AK-47s. The MONUC patrol seized their weapons and munitions.
