One military observer was killed Thursday 12 February near Katoto (22 km north-east of Bunia) during an attack launched by armed elements against a MONUC convoy.
The MONUC team was ambushed while returning to Bunia on a verification mission following allegations on serious exactions committed by the Union des Patriotes Congolais (UPC) against the civilian population in Katoto.
Reinforcements were deployed on the ground to help the team that came under the attack and to recover the body of the military member killed.
