Closure of MONUC

On 1 July 2010, the UN Security Council renamed MONUC the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) to reflect the new phase reached in the country.

Death of Tunisian Military Contingent Member in Kinshasa

MONUC Tunisian Military Contingent member, Hammouda Ben Hamma Zammazi, passed away this Wednesday, 4 February 2004, in Kinshasa, following heart failure.
Caporal Chef Zammazi joined MONUC on 4 October 2003. As a Tunisian Military Contingent member, he was an Assistant Radio Operator within the Neutral Force for the security of the Transitional Institutions. He was 32 years of age.

Formalities are ongoing for the repatriation of his body to Tunisia.

United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Established in 1999, MONUC was created to monitor the ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and support peace efforts. In 2010, the mission transitioned to MONUSCO to reflect a shift toward stabilization and long-term peacebuilding.
