MONUC is endeavoring for the return of peace in Bukavu

The town of Bukavu has been shaken by light and heavy gun firing since late afternoon Wednesday,
26 May 2004. Clashes are reported in the town centre, Nguba, Ruzizi I, Collège Al-Fajiri and Nyawera districts between the regular troops of the 10th military region of the Congolese national army and troops loyal to Colonel Jules Mutebutsi, former Deputy Commander of the 10th military region who was relieved of his duties since last March.
The exact number of victims is not known as of yet, but a temporary report indicates that there are at least five dead and 19 injured in the ranks of the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC), two dead in the ranks of Colonel Mutebutsi?s troops, 7 dead and 6 injured in the rank of civilians. Several houses and shops were looted in the town centre and the town is without electricity.

MONUC seriously regrets the renewed fighting and remains in close contact with the Transitional Government as well as the parties on the ground in a bid to stabilise the situation and secure a cease-fire. Simultaneously, MONUC is proceeding with patrols in Bukavu. MONUC military presence has been reinforced by troops from Goma and Kindu that will be joined by other soon. MONUC has taken control of strategic positions in several areas in the town to prevent further escalation.

MONUC has stepped up its efforts for the restoration of peace and is ensuring the protection of persons under an imminent danger. It urges all players to work for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the restoration of peace to Bukavu.
