UN Chief of Peacekeeping Operations to visit DRC
The UN Under Secretary General for Peacekeeping operations, Jean-Marie Guéhenno, is due to arrive in Kinshasa on Wednesday 19 May 2004 for a weeklong working visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo and the sub-region.
Mr. Guéhenno is due to hold talks with Congolese authorities and members of the International Committee to Support the Transition (CIAT).
The Under Secretary General will then travel to Bunia, Bukavu and Uvira to inquire into the deployment process of the Ituri and Kivu Brigades.
After the DRC, Mr. Guéhenno is scheduled to travel to Uganda and Rwanda to hold talks with the leaders of both countries. South Africa will be the last leg of his regional tour.
Before leaving Kinshasa, the UN senior member and head of the peacekeeping operations is to inaugurate a stele erected in memory of all the fallen peacekeepers since the establishment of the UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo in November 1999. The monument is in MONUC headquarters in Kinshasa.
