Local elections: MONUC supports the calendar announced by the Independent Electoral Commission


Kinshasa, 28 March 2009 -
Alan Doss, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC welcomes the announcement today by the Independent Electoral Commission of the calendar of operations regarding the revision of the electoral register for the DRC urban, municipal and local elections.

According to the calendar, the start date for the revision of the electoral register for the city province of Kinshasa and the province of Bas Congo is fixed for Sunday 7 June 2009, and is scheduled to take two months to complete.

This will be followed by operations for the rest of the country that will start on 2 August 2009 and are scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

Alan Doss welcomes this announcement by the Congolese authorities.

"The organization of the urban, municipal and local elections will complete the electoral cycle that started in 2005, with the identification and registering of electors," he said.

He assured the full support of MONUC because "this conforms to the mandate contained in UN Security Council resolution 1856 of the 22nd of December 2008," he affirmed.
