6 peacekeepers killed in Accident near Goma

Six MONUC peacekeepers of the South African contingent were killed Tuesday, 6 April 2004, when their armoured vehicle accidentally fell into Lake Kivu in an attempt to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
Another five military staff members managed to climb out of the armoured vehicle. One of them was seriously injured and the remaining four sustained minor injuries. They were transferred to the MONUC hospital in Goma for a medical check.

The accident occurred mid-day between Sake and Minova districts, about 35 Km away from the West of Goma. The 11 peacekeepers were returning from a routine patrol in that area.

MONUC dispatched a rescue team to the site of the accident in order to recover the vehicle and the bodies of the victims.

Altogether, there have been 34 peacekeepers fallen since MONUC deployment to the DRC in November 1999.
