Briefing Note on the Cordon and Search operation in Penyi

This Friday 11 March 2005, at about 4 o'clock local time (GMT + 2), MONUC Ituri Brigade launched a Cordon and Search operation in Penyi, situated approximately 30 kilometres east of Bunia.
The operation was jointly conducted by four companies ' approximately 600 peacekeepers ' of the South African, Pakistani, Nepalese and Bangladeshi contingents. The combined operation was backed by transport helicopters and armoured vehicles to bring the troops to the operation zone. The detachment was also backed by close air support armed helicopters.

Troop deployment and ground operations in the zone started at about 8 o'clock a.m.

Cordon and search operations started at about 8 o'clock and finished at approximately 16 hours local time.

No engagement with armed elements has been reported.
