Death of MONUC military staff not far from Bukavu

A military staff of the South African contingent within the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo passed away Tuesday, 30 March 2004, after being fatally wounded in an isolated incident that occurred in Kavumu, 30 km North of Bukavu.
The military staff member, in civilian clothing and unarmed, was returning to his base situated not far from the Kavumu airport when the Uruguayan guard units stationed at the Adi Kivu base heard two gunshots. They immediately moved to the scene where the South African military staff sustained an injury. The latter was brought back to the Adi Kivu base where he died a few hours later as a result of the injuries.

Armed men were seen on the site of the incident, but no exchange of fire was reported.

The commander of the 10th military region pledged to make every effort to find the perpetrator and take appropriate steps so that such serious incidents do not happen again. MONUC has initiated an investigation with a view to establish whether it was a deliberate attack or an accident.

It is the 27th MONUC military staff who has died since the mission began deployment in November 1999.
