DRC peace process: a priority for the United Nations

The peace process in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains a priority for the UN Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr. Jean-Marie Guéhenno declared upon arriving in Kinshasa Thursday evening. « The purpose of my visit is to show the United Nations' commitment», he said.
Mr. Guéhenno said he was impressed by the progress made by the DRC in a year. In a briefing on the situation in the DRC during his previous visit, he recalled that a year ago, there was a deepening crisis in Ituri, MONUC was not reinforced yet, atrocities were committed in north-eastern DRC, the government was not put in place; many tough decisions were not made yet. « Governors and Vice-governors were not appointed yet, but to date, those decisions have been made. (?) I am greatly encouraged by the progress achieved. However, we should bear in mind that there is still a lot to achieve», Mr. Guéhenno said.

During his weeklong visit to the DRC, the head of the Peacekeeping Operations Department is due to hold talks with Congolese authorities and members of the International Committee to Support the Transition (CIAT). Mr. Guéhenno is scheduled to travel to Ituri and the Kivus to gather information about the deployment process of the Ituri and Kivus Brigades.

After the DRC, he is due to travel to Kampala and Kigali to hold talks with the leaders of both countries. Mr. Guéhenno is due to end his tour with a visit to South Africa.
