MONUC declaration following the Nairobi meeting between the DRC Government and the CNDP

Kinshasa December 21, 2008 - The Special Representative of the Secretary General in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Alan Doss, was in contact with the Special Envoy of the Secretary General for the Great Lakes region, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in connection with the meeting which ended yesterday in Nairobi within the framework of the dialogue between the representatives of the DRC Government and the Congrès National pour la Défense du Peuple (CNDP).
President Obasanjo qualified the dialogue as difficult but also encouraging.

MONUC's supports wholeheartedly the efforts of President Obasanjo and his co-facilitator former President Benjamin Mkapa, and is ready to help in any way possible in order to advance the dialogue.

MONUC calls on all the parties to respect the suspension of hostilities and eagerly awaits the resumption of dialogue on 7 January next. Meanwhile MONUC continues its redeployment to better protect the civilians, and to stabilise the situation in the Kivu Provinces.
