MONUC describes Kinshasa Act of Commitment and Nominations within Territorial Administration

MONUC describes Kinshasa Act of Commitment and Nominations within Territorial Administration as Meaningful Breakthrough
The signing of the Act of Commitment for the pacification and disarmament in Ituri as well as the appointments within the territorial Administration constitute some steps forward in the DRC Transition.
Should all the armed groups implement the Kinshasa Act of Commitment signed on Friday 14 May 2004, it will mark the real end of hostilities and the beginning of reconstruction in Ituri District.

The successful outcome of the lengthy negotiations on the territorial administration should enable the new provincial authorities to give impetus to the national administration across the DRC territory.

MONUC applauds the significant breakthrough indicating that significant progress is possible with political will and a sense of compromise. The results achieved provide grounds for hope that transitional players will pursue their efforts of putting in place a unified army and an integrated police with the same resolve. MONUC reiterates its willingness to provide them full support in accordance with its mandate with a view to organising free, transparent and democratic elections within the set constitutional time frame.
