MONUC pays final respects to five fallen staff

MONUC civilian and military staff paid their final respects to five military colleagues on Thursday 18 June 2004: Ghanaian captain Fidelis Yaw Atidigah; two South African soldiers, Martin Mokgatlhe and David Reitumetse Matlakele; a Nepalese Warrant officer, K.C Ram; and a Kenyan UN volunteer, Stephen Kariuku Ikubu.
At the ceremony, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. William Lacy Swing, expressed his condolences to the bereaved families as well as to the Ghanaian, Kenyan and South African governments. To date, 57 military and civilian; both national and international staff have died while on duty in DRC. « May this be a legacy to those still to come, and an assurance to our hosts, the Congolese people, that the International Community is in the Democratic Republic of Congo to fulfil a peaceful mission, whatever the price or effort involved», Mr. Swing said.

MONUC Force Commander, General Samaila Iliya, the representatives of the Kenyan and South African embassies in the DRC, as well senior members of the Ghanaian, Nepalese and South African contingents also paid tribute to the deceased. The Ghanaian chargé d?affaires, Mr. Amankwaah, also attended the ceremony.
