MR. ALAN DOSS, HEAD OF MONUC RECEIVED BY PRESIDENT JOSEPH KABILA

Mr. Alan Doss, the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Head of MONUC, the Peacekeeping Mission of the UN in DRC, was received today by the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mr. Joseph Kabila, at his Kinshasa residence.

Mr. Doss, who wanted to pay a courtesy call to the Head of State soon after his assumption of duty, expressed his satisfaction to be back in the DRC, a country where he was posted twenty years ago, when he represented the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). During this first contact, the Special Representative also conveyed to President Kabila, the greetings and best wishes of Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

At the end of his visit, Mr. Doss briefly met with the press and again expressed his pleasure to be back in the Congo. The Special Representative declared that he intended to contribute, in his new functions, to the consolidation of peace in the country. The United Nations and MONUC strongly support the President's initiative concerning the Conference on Peace, Security and Development in the Kivus he declared. All will also be done for the implementation of the Nairobi Joint Communiqué and to support the national authorities in their responsibilities to protect the vulnerable populations he said, as well as supporting, through the United Nations system, their efforts for economic and social recovery throughout the whole country.
