North Kivu: MONUC fires warning shots to prevent new movements of CNDP troops

Kinshasa, 8 September 2008 - This Monday morning, MONUC's Blue Helmets in North Kivu fired warning shots to the troops of the Congrès National pour la Défense du Peuple (CNDP), in the areas close to Nyanzale locality in Rutshuru territory, 65km north of Goma, in order to prevent new movements of CNDP troops in this zone, and more precisely in the locality of Kikuku.
On Saturday last, following an attempt by CNDP troops to capture new positions in the locality of Nyanzale, MONUC has had to exert a strong military pressure and had required the immediate withdrawal of CNDP troops to their original positions. The CNDP troops subsequently withdrew from Nyanzale.

MONUC demands of the CNDP to strictly respect the provisions of the Goma Acts of Engagement, and calls on all the signatory parties to observe restraint. The Blue Helmets continue to closely monitor the evolution of the situation in Nyanzale, and in the whole of both Kivu provinces.
