Press Review of 12 December 2007

Today's local papers mainly focus on the military situation in North Kivu.
"The situation is bad in North Kivu," reports Le Potentiel, indicating, "since Monday, Nkunda's insurgents have re-conquered the locality of Mushaki, the territory of Masisi, 40 km North West of the town of Goma."

The occupation of Mushaki marks "a dramatic turn in Nkunda's adventure in eastern DRC," maintains Le Palmarès, highlighting, "Mushaki is a strategic position leading to the town of Goma."

"Monuc has deployed 4,500 peacekeepers to defend Mushaki and Saké," says Le Palmarès, quoting Williams Swing.

"Some Congolese people question Monuc and the international community's willingness to fight N'Kunda," says Le Palmarès.

"Congolese people are fed up with the good intentions... lip services," points out La Référence Plus.

Le Palmarès says "MONUC boss will be held responsible should Goma and Saké fall."

"With the capture of Mushake by the insurgents, the regular army's victory was not apparently not managed properly," says Le Phare, indicating, "it is now time for new counter-offensive..."

"Congolese government has been unwillingly exposed to this war of attrition or all-out war," reports Le Potentiel. The paper also recalls "the recommendations made by the UN, the European Union, Washington...in favour of political and diplomatic solutions rather than the military; For refusing to heed this piece of advice and acting against the 9 November agreement reached in Nairobi with Rwanda, it would not be a surprise to see the DRC abandoned in the fight against Nkunda by Monuc and its neighbours."

Drawing a lesson, Le Potentiel urges, "more caution and pragmatism before taking any action in future."
