Press Review of 16 April 2007

Today's local press deals with various topical issues.
Commenting on Parliament's activities, Le Potentiel says "Opposition MPs left a Parliament session Friday in high dudgeon" declaring that they would not return until the following conditions are met: "1. Television and Radio channels CCTV, CKTV and Radio Liberté must be reopened; 2. MLC (led by former Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba now in Portugal and key challenger to President Kabila in the presidential run-off)'s seat now occupied by the police must be turned over to MLC and 3. A guarantee must be made that intimidations and acts of vandalism aimed against UN (Union pour la Nation) senior members must stop."
La Référence Plus signals another act of vandalism against MLC member Paul Musafiri, ex-Minister by "FARDC troop."

L'Observateur, for its part, comments on a peace rally organized last week-end by the League des Avocats du Peuple during which they handed a memo to State Prosecutor asking him "to immediately issue an arrest warrant against Senator Jean-Pierre Bemba."

Le Palmarès focuses on the UN Mission's mandate, indicating, "MONUC mandate has been extended for a month by the UN Security Council."

In the same vein, La Tempête des Tropiques argues, "United Nations is greatly concerned about the post-conflict situation in the DRC because it represents a serious threat against international peace and security in the region." In this respect, the paper further says "France has proposed a 13-page resolution on the redefinition of MONUC's mandate."
