Press Review- 24 September 2007

The Kinshasa press headlines the visit of DRC president Joseph Kabila in Belgium and in New York where he will attend the general meeting of the United Nations. As announced, president Kabila arrived yesterday in Belgium. After Brussels, he will go to New York.
Over there, "Le Potential" says he will seize "the opportunity of the general meeting of the United Nations, to appreciate the efforts authorized by the international community in order to put an end to the crisis of legitimacy, and to restore peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo."

Moreover, Joseph Kabila, "will challenge the UN on its role in the effective return to peace in the DRC and in the Great Lakes region, from the point of view of the revival of sustainable development," Le Potential adds.

This is why, according to "L'Observateur," "the security situation in the eastern provinces will be high on the agenda in the talks which the DRC president will have in New York."

New York is where, "the United States agreed to finance more than half of MONUC's budget... and the traditional partners of the DRC are increasingly curious to know the contents of the partnership agreement between the Democratic Republic of Congo and China," informs Le Potential.

For its part "L'Avenir" said the International Monetary fund (IMF) "chose to put pressure on the Congolese government in order to receive a copy of the economic cooperation agreements signed between the DRC and China."

Completely "...unacceptable for a sovereign country like the DRC," L'Avenir estimates.

L'Avenir recommends that "the Congolese have to support the government thoroughly, if they want to be taken seriously by external partners who claim to assume the right to impose their choices on Congolese leaders".

The DRC and China signed last week "cooperation agreements amounting to 5 billion American dollars for construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure, as well as mining", indicates Le Potential.

On national policy, Etienne Tshisekedi invited last Saturday "the members of the preparatory commission of the UDPS congress to make an evaluation of the 25 year fight for a new approach, that of the conquest of power," says "Le Phare."

But, be prepared for "an arranged brawl between the militants of the UDPS" at the opening of work for this preparatory commission of UDPS congress, says "Le Palmarès."

The assessment? "... several seriously injured," indicates Le Palmarès.
