Security situation for 25 September 2008 (7pm)

Kinshasa , 25 September 2008 - In Dungu in Orientale Province, a crowd of hundreds of people attacked the MONUC observation post and the liaison office of the UN agency OCHA, plundering and destroying United Nations material and equipment.
The civil authorities also felt the fury of the demonstrators who tried to raid the residence as well as the offices of the territorial administrator. During these violent protests, two Blue Helmets from MONUC's Moroccan contingent were wounded.

In addition clashes were announced on 24 September between the DRC Armed Forces (FARDC) and the troops of the Congrès National pour la Défense du Peuple (CNDP) in Rugari, some 30km from Goma on the Rutshuru road, such as the area of JTN south of Nyanzale.

These clashes took place despite the agreement of the Commander of the FARDC 8th military region and the CNDP to cease hostilities. The MONUC Mobile Operational Base (MOB) in the area was caught in the crossfire. The FARDC later occupied the locality of Buranda, east of Mwezo.

MONUC notes with regret the capture of positions by the FARDC in the zones of separation, which had been recently surrendered by the CNDP on MONUC's request.

The FARDC took over the locality of Mashango in spite of the disengagement plan ratified by the DRC government. MONUC insists on the effective realisation of the commitments entered into by the FARDC, and requests them to withdraw from localities in the zones of separation, namely Ntamugenga, Butare and Kabizo.

Furthermore, MONUC announces that these acts are not likely to restore the climate of trust necessary for a durable suspension of hostilities and the implementation of the overall disengagement plan.
