Ten FNI militiamen killed in Ituri following clashes with peacekeepers in Kombokabo

A routine patrol of the Ituri Brigade was ambushed early Friday near Kombokabo village, 25 kilometres south west of Bunia, along the Bunia - Marabo axis.
A militia group of the Front Nationaliste Intégrationniste (FNI) opened fire on Peacekeepers for the Bangladeshi contingent. Reinforcements comprised of two Nepalese sections and an MI 25 combat helicopter were deployed immediately on the site.

Ten militiamen were killed, and several people, including two peacekeepers were injured. Two FNI militia camps were destroyed in Kombokabo and Ngaju.

The Ituri Brigade hunted the militiamen who fled toward the Songololo district.

The MONUC contingent acted under Chapter 7 of its mandate, which authorizes it to use force whenever necessary in order to protect civilians. In this case, the populations were indeed harassed by the FNI militiamen along the Bunia-Marabo road axes.
