Lieutenant-General Babacar Gaye (Senegal) takes office as new Force Commander of MONUC

Kinshasa, R.D. Congo, 4 April 2005: The new Force Commander of MONUC, Lieutenant-General Babacar Gaye of Senegal, took office in Kinshasa on 4 April 2005.
He will serve as the commander in chief of MONUC troops.

Born on 31 January 1951 at Saint-Louis, in Senegal, Lieutenant-General Gaye entered the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr, a school which trains Army officers in France. He was part of the « General de Gaulle promotion » of Saint-Cyr. It is also in France that he received the diploma from the Staff College of Compiègne and then the Certificate from the War School.

The new Force Commander is bringing to MONUC his 33-year experience within the Senegalese Armed Forces where he served as Director of Information Services and Public Relations (1993-1994) and as Chief of Staff (2000-2003).

General Gaye has participated in several external operations, including in the context of the United Nations: FUNU (Sinai), FINUL (Lebanon) and Desert Storm (Iraq).

He has been decorated several times in Senegal and abroad.

Prior to his appointment as Commander of UN troops in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, General Gaye served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Senegal to Germany and Austria, with the agencies of the United Nations based in Vienna, the Austrian capital.
