Kinshasa, R.D. Congo, 11 April 2005: MONUC congratulates the authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for the arrest in Bunia, Ituri District, Eastern Congo, on Saturday, 9 April 2005, of Mr. Mandro Kahwa, also known as 'Chief Kahwa', one of the militia leaders of PUSIC (Party for Unity and Safeguarding of the Integrity of Congo).
MONUC's congratulations especially go to the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor of the Republic for the actions taken against a certain number of armed groups in Ituri which thought they could continue to defy, with impunity, the government of the DRC and the international community.

MONUC stresses that the actions launched by the Prosecutor's Office and the Prosecutor in Bunia constitute operations conducted by the judicial authorities, with the support of the U.N. peacekeepers of the Ituri Brigade who made the arrests.

MONUC emphasizes that such actions go beyond the framework of the disarmament process specifically designed for Ituri, and should be viewed in the broader context of bringing an end to the culture of impunity, neutralizing those who think they are above the laws and arresting those responsible for massacres and gross violations of human rights.

Finally, MONUC is very pleased about the excellent cooperation between its units ' particularly the UN civilian police ' and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
