MONUC condemns the putsch attempt in Kinshasa

MONUC condemns in the strongest terms the Friday 11 June 2004 putsch attempt by Major Eric Lenge. It further reiterates his opposition to any use of force to accede to power. Upon being informed of the situation, MONUC immediately stepped up security around the residences of the president and the vice-presidents and enhanced patrols throughout the town of Kinshasa.
MONUC keeps in close touch with the Transitional Government to ensure that the mutineers are arrested and taken to court in the shortest possible time.

Immediately after the Bukavu events, the Congolese Government and people were again faced with a new ordeal. MONUC reiterates its unreserved support to the Government and declares that nothing will deter the transition from proceeding forward.
