MONUC hails the return of Government forces into Bukavu

MONUC welcomes both the withdrawal of the dissident troops under General Laurent Nkunda and Colonel Jules Mutebutshi from Bukavu and the return of Government forces under General Mbuza Mabe to the same town this Wednesday, 9 June 2004.
MONUC welcomes the successful development, which marks the comeback of the legitimate authorities of the 10th military region into the provincial capital of South Kivu and is likely to facilitate the restoration of order and the rule of law.

MONUC hopes that with the return of legitimate military authorities to Bukavu, the newly appointed Governors and Vice-Governors of the Transitional Government will immediately assume their duties.

MONUC will retain its troops in the town of Bukavu and its surrounding areas with a view to providing assistance to civilians in conjunction with the South Kivu provincial authorities and the Transitional Government.
