MONUC deplores the killing of two South African Peacekeepers near Rutshuru

Two MONUC South African peacekeepers were killed in a road accident near the town of Rutshuru, North Kivu, on Sunday 6 June.
Both peacekeepers were part of the thirty MONUC Task Force One peacekeepers that came under fire, a few minutes earlier, by unidentified gunmen in Rugari village, mid-way between Rutshuru and Goma. One person was injured in the rank of MONUC troops.

As they were rushing to their Rutshuru base for help after the attack, their vehicle overturned leaving two South African peacekeepers dead and 11 injured. They were airlifted to Kindu by helicopter for treatment at MONUC?s Hospital. The two peacekeepers killed were evacuated to Kindu on Monday to be transferred to South Africa along with 6 of the 11 injured.

This brings to 40, the number of MONUC peacekeepers killed while on duty for the restoration of peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The group was attacked by gunmen while attempting to verify information regarding an attack on a civilian car.
