MONUC Press Review - 18 October 2007

The principal columns of the daily newspapers published today in Kinshasa are devoted to the press conference given yesterday in Goma by DRC president Joseph Kabila.
And, during this meeting with journalists the head of the Congolese state qualified "Nkunda as a criminal," said L'Avenir.

This term of criminal, acknowledges L'Avenir, "in the eyes of the humanitarians in North Kivu does not seem strong enough in relation to the humanitarian catastrophe created by the war, in which Nkunda has not hesitated to recruit children into his army."

This is why, "Nkunda should be tracked and stopped," Le Palmarès justifies, quoting president Kabila.

In this light, the head of the Congolese State is "for a forced disarmament of Laurent Nkunda and his men," underlines L'Avenir.

"The insurrectionists have, like all other combatants, until the end of this month to enter the brassage centres," specifies Le Potentiel.

As long as "this state of neither combat or peace prevails, it is the armed groups that will benefit," analyses Le Potentiel.

For the simple reason, explains Le Potentiel, that "this lull enables them to recover and reinforce their military, insofar as they continue to control their network of supply which passes through adjoining countries."

Meanwhile, MONUC "denies supporting the dissidents of Nkunda," says La Référence Plus.

"MONUC said this kind of information arises from rumour and misinformation which is aimed at manipulating the population," informs Le Phare.

"Against the troops of Nkunda," says Le Phare, "the blue helmets support the FARDC."

Moreover, president Kabila "saluted the collaboration between FARDC and MONUC, which led to the surrender of some of Nkunda's troops," notes L'Observateur.
