Press Review of 1 February 2008

Today's local press mainly revolves around accusations against the UN Mission in the DR Congo.
The headlines in Le Potentiel read: "MONUC Humanitarian Activities have been called into question in the Kivus; Congolese people are blaming MONUC passiveness in the way it has been carrying out its mission."

The paper goes on to say, "Congolese people are growing even more hostile towards MONUC with the continued unrest in eastern DRC."

"Other UN agencies and humanitarian organisations are as well accused by the Congolese people...," writes Le Potentiel, indicating, "People do not trust MONUC any more with respect to the humanitarian activities."

The paper however advises against "any act of vandalism to avoid bringing discredit upon the country," and calls on the DRC Government "to organise public awareness campaign to educate the population on MONUC's mandate and/or mission in the DRC to avoid a persistent misunderstanding that may lead to altercations between MONUC and the population one day."

In the mean time, says L'Avenir, "UN Security Council has voiced its support to the Goma agreement seen as a way out to the North Kivu crisis."
