Press Review of 4 February 2008

Yesterday's earthquake in the Great Lakes region and enthronement of Catholic new Archbishop for Kinshasa are the two dominant issues in today's local press.
The headlines in Le Potentiel read: "The town of Bukavu hit by violent Earthquake yesterday."

"The earthquake left six people dead and several public facilities either totally or partially destroyed," says Le Palmarès.

Le Potentiel further reports, "President Kabila and Prime Minister Gizenga have put in place an ad hoc humanitarian team to closely monitor the situation."

"Government has taken the necessary steps to secure and assist the disaster victims," highlights Le Phare.

Referring to the enthronement of the new Catholic Archbishop of Kinshasa, Mr. Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya, Le Potentiel reports, "in his first religious service, the archbishop made a critical diagnosis of the overall situation in the country."

Archbishop Monsengwo "called for a genuine change of the mindset from the national stakeholders," says [Le Phare], indicating, "the archbishop also pleaded for a society where justice, transparency and good governance should prevail."
