Press Review of 12 April 2007

Today's local press mainly focuses on Jean-Pierre Bemba's trip to Portugal.
"State Prosecutor is seeking Senate's warrant to prosecute Jean-Pierre Bemba," reports L'Observateur.

"In a bid to have Senator Jean-Pierre Bemba's immunity lifted, the State Prosecutor recently addressed a letter to the Interim Office of the Parliament's Upper House," further said the paper.

In the meantime, reports La Référence Plus, "Jean-Pierre Bemba arrived in Portugal yesterday," where he and his family have been accommodated in "a villa under heavy police surveillance."

Jean-Pierre Bemba requested to be "airlifted up to the N'djili airport's tarmac, fearing the troops of the Special Presidential Guards heavily deployed all the way up to the airport ...," says Le Palmarès.

The former Vice-President was "finally escorted by UN Peacekeepers up to N'Djili airport...from where he flew to Portugal," says La Tempête des Tropiques.

"Will Jean-Pierre Bemba return to DRC? Under which conditions will he return," wonders Le Phare, indicating, "the whole thing looks like a dramatic exit in a theater rather than an exit for medical care..."

Unfortunately, says L'Observateur, arguing, "Yet, there was every chance that Jean-Pierre Bemba could play a major role in the Congolese political scene."

In the parliament, however, "ML C, his political party, has demanded urgent adoption of the law on the political opposition," writes Le Potentiel.

L'Avenir calls on MLC to understand hat "the time for armed opposition is now over; what people needed now is a peaceful cohabitation..."
