Press Review of 14 December 2007

The situation in eastern DRC remains the dominant issue of the local press.
The United Nations is greatly concerned about the situation in eastern DRC. "From Indonesia, the UN Secretary General appeals to Laurent N'Kunda to lay down weapons and encourages MONUC to assist the DRC authorities in restoring order," says Le Palmarès.

Le Phare reports "confusion in Katale..." whilst "the FARDC maintains the situation is under control."

"Congolese armed forces have lost a battle with the capture of Mushake by the rebels but not the war," points out La Référence Plus, echoing the Minister of Defense.

L'Observateur wonders "where N'Kunda is drawing all his firepower"? The paper answers, "he has certainly been receiving support from abroad," highlighting that his firepower should be either identical or higher than that of the FARDC.

"DRC Government for its part is exploring every avenue to bring peace and stability to the North and South Kivu provinces by organising a conference in which Nkunda or his delegation will participate," says Le Potentiel.

In the meantime, "a joint commission DRC-Uganda was to meet this Friday," announces La Référence Plus.
The agenda of the meeting includes: "economy, defence and security issues," says Le Potentiel.
