Press Review of 17 December 2007

Today's local press mainly focuses on the Goma meeting between Congolese and Rwandan authorities. Also in attendance, the representatives of the UN, EU, US and African Union.
"The meeting set up a team to monitor the implementation of the commitments made by DRC and Rwanda in favour of regional stability," reports Le Potentiel.

"As an example, Kigali pledged not to give any support to the dissident Laurent Nkunda's militia members whilst Kinshasa pledged to come up with a military plan on how to neutralise Rwandan Hutu rebels," writes Le Potentiel.

"Kinshasa divided between negotiations and war against N'Kunda," says Le Palmarès, highlighting, "MPs and dignitaries of North and South Kivus met with President Kabila in this regard last Saturday; some opted for a military solution while others for negotiations with the dissident Generals."

However, reports Le Palmarès, "both sides agreed on the need for immediately holding a peace conference in the Kivus."

L'Avenir argues that "opting for negotiations today would appear as back pedalling on the side of the Government after opting for a military solution."

Le Potentiel supports "the option for a comprehensive dialogue beyond the different ethnic groups in the Kivus as recommended by the international community and a cabinet meeting."
