Today's local press in Kinshasa mainly focus on yesterday's commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the seizure of power by AFDL "Alliance des Forces démocratiques pour la Libération".
Yesterday, Thursday 17 May 2007, "DRC marked the 10th anniversary of the seizure of power by AFDL, 10 years ago," reports L'Observateur, indicating, "There was a huge military parade on the boulevard Triomphal in the presence of several high ranking authorities."

La Tempête des Tropiques notes "the absence of the former dignitaries who served President Mobutu's regime: the President of the Senate, Mr. Leon Kengo Wa Dondo; the Minister of Agriculture, Nzanga Mobutu, son of the late President Mobutu and many others." "How could the dignitaries celebrate their own defeat in 1997," wonder the papers, indicating, "the absence of Leon Kengo is a clear message to the political leadership that has been fuelling frustrations, instead of favoring reconciliation."

For L'Avenir, "17 May will long remain at the center of controversy between the nationalists, Mobutu's dignitaries and those owing allegiance to President Kabila..." In any case, the current generation needs to know the truth about 17 May 1997 as to what happened exactly.
