Press Review of 19 December 2006

No special issue in today's local press.

La Référence Plus reports, "Provincial assemblies were installed yesterday in administrative towns of provinces." The paper highlights, "after the National Assembly and Head of State, DR Congo has now three institutions that are operational after the democratic elections."

Under the headlines, "Danger of return to monolithic practices at the National Assembly," Le Potentiel highlights, "Being the majority party in the lower chamber of the Parliament, Alliance de la Majorité Présidentielle (AMP), is trying to muzzle the opposition, represented by Union pour la Nation (UN)." The paper further says, "informed observers sees the seed of a return to the so-much decried monolithic system fought for over twenty years."

Le Phare, for its part, maintains, "Relations between the three poles of the Presidential coalition (PPRD-PALU-UDEMO) are excellent contrary to rumours." The paper also reports, "Antoine Gizenga (PALU leader) and Zanga Mobutu (UDEMO leader) conferred last week with the Head of State and cleared up all their misunderstandings."

La Tempête des tropiques has a different view and writes, "PPRD- PALU- UDEMO: bad start for a wing of the AMP rejects the Government's agreement signed by the three political parties (PPRD-UDEMO-PALU) on the eve of the electoral campaign; it is just a matter of weeks for the coalition to blow up."

Echoing the Minister of Mining, Mathieu Kalele, L'Avenir says, "President Kabila's 5 objectives can be attained with the help of the Mining sector."
