Press Review of 18 December 2006

A communiqué issued by the former Vice-President Jean- Pierre Bemba's cabinet reporting his evacuation abroad following an accident is the top issue in today's local press.
"Jean- Pierre Bemba Gombo involved in an accident," writes Le Palmarès on its front page. "MLC leader had a sprain on his left leg in a fitness session at his residence," says the paper, highlighting, "The rumours about Jean-Pierre Bemba's death last Saturday are unfounded."

Forum des As reports, "Jean-Pierre Bemba left Kinshasa yesterday for medical care in a specialised clinic abroad."

"Jean-Pierre Bemba hurriedly evacuated abroad," writes Le Phare, indicating, "Alarming news from N'djili airport said MLC leader was escorted by high ranking members of his political party MLC and the political platform that supports him Union pour la Nation; in the evening, his cabinet director mentioned that Mr. Bemba was transferred abroad."

L'Avenir deplores the fact that "the communiqué does not give any clarification about the circumstances surrounding the sprain."

In other news, Le Potentiel reports, "State's machinery seized up," indicating, "Prime Minister's appointment in a bad way and even blocked due to never-ending discussions on power share." As a result, "the transition is at a standstill and the sceptical are rejoicing."

Referring to the Great Lakes conference, La Référence Plus reports, "Kabila has called on the States of the Region to help the DR Congo get rid of the foreign armed groups that established in the DRC uninvited to set the stage for peace, good neighborliness, the renaissance of the Great Lakes region and the happiness of its populations."
