Press Review of 21 May 2008

Debate around the Spokesperson for the Opposition is the dominant news in today's local papers.
The headlines in L'Avenir read: "Jean-Pierre Bemba's comeback is fuelling talks more than any topic."

The paper quotes pro-MLC sources as indicating, "Jean-Pierre Bemba is to return to the DRC on 27 May." The paper goes on to ask whether "Jean-Pierre Bemba has secured the security guarantees required, or he just gave up his requirement."

A large portion of the population however believe "Bemba's unconditional comeback is finally motivated by the ongoing debates on who will be the Opposition's spokesperson," further says the paper, indicating, "Bemba must avoid continued empty seat policy bearing in mind that Etienne Tshisekedi paid for it after the Sun City talks in South Africa," reports L'Avenir.

In Bunia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, "the fifth anniversary of Ituri's pacification is commemorated today," writes La Référence Plus, recalling that "the Ituri conflict killed more than 60 thousand people in 5 years."

In other news, Le Phare announces that "Serge Maheshe's trial will close today with the verdict to be published by the military court of the Bukavu garrison."
