Press Review of 20 May 2008

Today's local press deals with various subjects.
"Invited to participate in a Radio Okapi programme "Grand Temoin," Senator Leonard She Okitundu, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief of Staff of President Kabila's office, caused an incident at the entrance to MONUC headquarters," reports La Tempête des Tropiques, indicating, "due to his social rank, he refused to comply with the security formalities at MONUC headquarters, calling the tough security regulations a sheer snub" and strange enough, "he uttered insults combined with threats to the security guards."

The paper denounces the senator's "care-free attitude that does not befit his rank" and calls on "MONUC to soften its security formalities for the VIP category to avoid further incidents."

"MONUC reportedly decided to protest to the Senate over the senator's misconduct," says La Tempête des Tropiques.

In other news, Le Palmarès reports, "Belgian minister of Foreign Affairs, Karel de Gucht is now in China to foil the Chinese contract with the DRC."

Before leaving Brussels, Karel de Gucht declared to having "a moral right to criticize the DRC authorities," further reports the paper.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is where "174 people irregularly detained in Makala prison have been released," says [L'Avenir].

[L'Observateur], for its part, writes, "... the MPs have recommended that the perpetrators, co-perpetrators or accomplices to the irregular use of government property be taken to court..."

In so far as "several irregularities have been reported in the issuance of the registration certificates for government plots and real estate," highlights Le Potentiel.

"Many political figures and government officials are allegedly involved in such practices," informs Le Potentiel.
