Press Review of 3 March 2008

Today's press mainly focus on the Bas-Congo situation.
The headlines in Le Phare read: "Congolese police has sorted out the situation." As a result of the clashes between the police and the Bundu dia Kongo members, "seven people were killed and dozens were injured, according to the Department of Home Affairs," says the paper.

Referring to the clashes, the paper says, "the police force used fire arms and hand grenades whilst the ''Makesa'' members of the Bundu dia Kongo used machetes, arrows...."

Le Palmarès writes, "calm has indeed been restored to the city of Luozi."

L'Avenir blames the current laissez-aller on the Government for not taking tougher actions in the past when the "January 2007 events broke out in that province."

Le Potentiel however criticizes the Police for "using disproportionate means."

As a result of the continued rumours about the assassination of the Head of State, "DRC Government has instructed all mobile phone dealers to identify all their subscribers across the country," reports Le Phare.

In other news, the United Nations Mission for the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) paid "compensation fees yesterday to the victims of its helicopter crash in Kutu, Bandundu province," reports L'Avenir, indicating, "The compensation fees consist in the amount of US$ 4,700."
