Press Review of 29 February 2008

Today's local press mainly focus on the rumors about the assassination of President Kabila.
"The Governor of Kinshasa has promised to punish whoever fuel the rumour that President Kabila has been assassinated," reports Le Phare, highlighting, "the President is enjoying good health."

As a result of the rumor, "The town center of Kinshasa was emptied yesterday afternoon following the same rumor having circulated for more than two weeks," the paper further says.

Referring to the rumors, La Référence Plus reports, "the rumours are aimed at preventing the local and foreign investors from participating to President Kabila's five top priorities for the reconstruction of the country."

In other news, "Reverent Malu Malu has been appointed coordinator of the peace and reconstruction programme of the two Kivus provinces by presidential decree," reports Le Phare

"Gizenga has remained silent as usual after serving one year as Prime Minister," says Le Potentiel, indicating, "the silence is construed by many observers as a sign of confession of his failure to improve the situation in the DRC."

Le Palmarès, for its part, echoes the Minister of Home Affairs' message to the political and military movement called Bundu dia Kongo that "the Government is determined to restore the rule of law in the Bas Congo.

"Too much is too much," says Le Palmarès, referring to the situation in the Bas Congo, warning that "the situation in Bas Congo may influence other parts of the country to act the same way."
