Press Review of 28 February 2008

The local press today focuses on the situation in the Bas-Congo province.
"The situation in the Bas Congo province is extremely explosive with the kidnappings, harassments, killings...,"says Le Palmarès, indicating, "a reinforcement team has been deployed in to restore public order and State authority; In the same province, non-native young people are reportedly hunted by the Bundu dia Kongo Bdk adepts."

Le Phare reports, "Catholic, Protestant and Muslims aren't either spared by the acts of violence..."

Le Palmarès recommends "...the removal of the immunity of the chief of the Bdk as member of the parliament on the one hand, and on the other, the banning of his political and military movement's activities..."

Le Phare quotes the spiritual leader of the Bdk as denouncing, "the manipulation of some of the Kongo political leaders and the non-members youth of his political and military movement." The paper wonders whether the DRC is still governed with issues such as the "N'Kunda, Kyungu, Bundu dia Kongo, the rumours about the toppling of the Head of State..."

The paper reports an unusual situation in Kinshasa, the capital city of the DRC "Some people can no longer leave their homes early morning, drivers stop early because of the frightful messages being circulated almost on a daily basis in spite of the repeated images on television showing the Head of State conferring with political and economic stakeholders."
