Press Review of 22 May 2007

The local press's spotlight today is turned on the holding of a round table over the security situation in North and South Kivu.
The round table will include "all sections of the social sector in the Kivu province to enable them to find durable solutions for a peaceful co-existence between all the ethnical groups and the political tendencies in both Kivus," explains Le Potentiel.
L'Observateur and L'Avenir believe "the peace initiative taken by the Government needs encouraging."
In this respect, Le Potentiel reports, "if organized in haste, some people might take advantage of the opportunity and fill their own pockets."
"The round table must plainly address all the issues including the most sensitive...," says L'Observateur.
Echoing some observers, L'Avenir indicates, "The consultations are doomed to failure..." because "the key players are absent from the forum...notably FDLR's leaders," explains L'Avenir, warning, "their absence will further exacerbate rebels' frustrations for being marginalized."
Le Phare, for its part, refers to North Kivu as a "territory without master where forces of law and order are absent...," calling on PM Gizenga's Government "to protect the population and their properties," warning, "North Kivu is on the edge of a new crisis with the presence of Laurent N'Kunda, the Mai Mai and the FDLR."
