Press Review of 26 June 2007

Today's local press deals with various issues.

Le Palmarès reports, "The trial over the murder of Serge Maeshe (Radio Okapi Journalist) resumed in the Bukavu military garrison yesterday."

"The public prosecutor presented 14 detainees during the trial, including the two presumed murderers of Serges Maheshe," says Le Palmarès, highlighting, "one of the detainees allegedly threatened the investigators whilst heading to the scene of the murder."
"Talks between DRC Government and European Union came up against a stumbling block that needs to be overcome in order to restore security to eastern DRC," reports Le Potentiel, explaining, "the DRC Government is determined to implement the policy of the baton and the carrot...including a military option to deter and disarm the negative forces within the framework of the DDR programme while the European Union, for its part, strongly urges political solutions instead of the military option, fearing ill-prepared military operations that would have negative impact on the local populations."
In other news, L'Avenir voices its surprise that "despite the Supreme Court of Justice verdict to invalidate some MPs' mandates and to restore other MPs' rights, the office of the Lower Chamber of the Parliament has remained silent on the issue, in sympathy with the MPs whose mandates should be invalidated."
