Press Review of 22 June 2007

Today's local press has once again commented on the UNSC's 48-hour visit to DRC.
"UNSC's mission was a failure," says La Tempête des Tropiques, indicating, "DRC's problems have remained unsolved." Echoing the UNSC, the paper says, "DRC has not made any meaningful progress in respect of the security objectives set."

Le Palmarès quotes President Joseph Kabila as declaring, "DRC will have a professional army to protect and defend its entire territory within two years."

La Référence Plus deplores that "no military solution has been envisaged despite the insecurity prevailing in DRC," and condemns "the use of statements such as - we are greatly concerned about the situation in eastern DRC by the UNSC."

"MPs from both Kivu provinces need a robust solution to stop the armed conflicts in eastern DRC," reports L'Observateur, indicating, "unfortunately UNSC has rather prioritized peaceful means; which means the MPs and the UNSC's views on the settlement of the eastern DRC's conflicts are divided." L'Observateur concludes, "UNSC's team has not reached any common ground over the eastern DRC's issue."
