Press Review of 28 March 2007

Today's local press in Kinshasa has focused on yesterday's news conference held by European Union's Ambassadors, following the 22 - 23rd March events in Gombe, one of the 26 districts of Kinshasa, the capital city of DRC.
The 22 – 23 March bloody clash in Kinshasa continue to spark off reactions. The most recent is from the European Union's ambassadors in Kinshasa in a news conference yesterday, "firmly condemning the premature use of force," reports Le Potentiel. For the European Union's ambassadors, "DRC Government and Senator Jean-Pierre Bemba did not exhaust every avenue...," writes La Référence Plus, further indicating, "The EU ambassadors appealed to the Congolese authorities to do everything in their power and create a democratic space likely to guarantee free expression of different opinions."

In unambiguous term, the European ambassadors "urged the Congolese Government to listen to reason...," says Le Potentiel "in the event the Government should depend on its assistance..."

"Blackmailing or just diplomatic pressures?" wonders Le Potentiel. For the paper, "yesterday's news conference was apparently a serious warning to the Government."

Le Palmarès, for its part, reports "European Ambassadors' statement came as a huge surprise," and "contradicts their own ministers'."

As a matter of fact, "Jean-Pierre Bemba's defiance of the law and provocations had already been condemned by the ministers whom the ambassadors represent in the DRC?" says Le Palmarès referring to "Ms. Girardin, French Minister for Cooperation during his visit to Kinshasa immediately after the 22 - 23 March clashes between FARDC and Jean-Pierre Bemba's close guards."

Jean-Pierre Bemba's "destabilisation plan is no longer hidden," reports L'Avenir, calling the "foreigners attempting to push Jean-Pierre Bemba into exile with a view to escaping the DRC Justice enemies of the DRC..."

"European diplomats put the death of toll of the 22 – 23 March at 200 – 500," says La Référence Plus.
