Press Review of 2 April 2007

Today Monday 02 April 2007, Kinshasa press has talked about the possibility for former Vice-President Jean-Pierre Bemba to receive authorization to fly to Portugal for medical care.
Initially planned for last week-end, Jean-Pierre Bemba has not traveled to Portugal yet.
"MLC leader is [still] stuck in Kinshasa," says Le Palmarès, indicating, "Lisbon has set pre-conditions prior to receiving the former Vice-President: a written commitment from the former Vice-President to never indulge in political activities in Portugal on the one hand, and on the other, a written commitment from the Congolese authorities to..."

"A solution will hopefully be found when President Kabila returns from Lubumbashi shortly," says Le Palmarès.

L'Avenir rather advises the President "against accepting to issue the written authorization for the former Vice-President to fly to Portugal for medical care since no official letter has been addressed to him," indicating, "the Head of State should not bypass the Government just to please Jean-Pierre Bemba, like in the past under the 1+4 architecture."

Le Phare, for its part, says "Jean-Pierre Bemba's dossier with the court is on the back burner" awaiting "official report establishing the Vice-President's guilt on the 22 - 23 March clashes in Kinshasa and removal of his immunity by the Senate," explains the paper.

In other news, "She Okitundu, former cabinet director of President Kabila was seriously injured in the face and the left leg, in a car accident," reports Le Palmarès, indicating,"He nearly got killed and is currently undergoing surgical operation."
