Press Review of 3 July 2007

Senator Jean-Pierre Bemba's interview with RTBF is the dominant issue in today's local press.
The headlines in La Tempête des Tropiques read: "Jean-Pierre Bemba (Joseph Kabila's major challenger to the presidential election) denounces DRC's drift towards totalitarianism."

"Is DRC heading to a democratic State or anything else?" Echoing Mr. Bemba, Le Potentiel answers, "If not democracy, it is certainly dictatorship."

Jean-Pierre Bemba was answering back "to President Kabila's statement against him in his interview with Jeune Afrique," reports La Tempête des Tropiques.

Le Potentiel refers to the interview with RTBF as a "tit for tat session."

L'Avenir, in turn, answers back to Jean-Pierre Bemba, "Mr. Bemba is not the right person to teach a lesson in democracy to the DRC's political leadership."

"Truce between Kabila and Bemba has been disrupted," says Le Potentiel. "The incisive statements used by both of them is an indication that they are still determined to fight each other," says Le Potentiel, warning, "such an atmosphere may be used by opportunists to disrupt the ongoing political process." Le Potentiel recalls, "Jean Pierre Bemba pledged not to engage in political activities whatsoever during his medical stay in Portugal."
