Press Review of 8 January 2008

The forum on the peace, security and development of the North and South Kivu provinces is the dominant issue in today's local press.
Having started last Sunday with pump, "the forum is already facing several organisation-related challenges," reports La Tempête des Tropiques
North and South Kivu civil societies voiced its protest over "the dominant number of representatives from Kinshasa...," explains Le Potentiel. The paper also reports "a threat by the Nande ethnic group to dissociate to stay away from the forum on the grounds that their claims have not been taken into account...."
As a result: "yesterdays plenary did not take place," reports La Tempête des Tropiques.
"...The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the DRC however remains optimistic as to the happy outcome of the forum...," says Le Palmarès,
In the meantime, Prime Minister, Antoine Gizenga, has officially launched the operation ''Fund for the Peace in the DRC.'
The operation is designed to "gather funds for the North and South Kivus populations," says Le Potentiel, indicating, "The PM contributed an amount of US$ 3,005, which represents half of his emoluments..."
In this respect, Le Palmarès reports, "The Ministers have contributed US$ 1,000 each, say, ¼ of their emoluments...whilst the Deputy Ministers contributed US$ 800 ..."
The paper therefore concludes, "the DRC PM earns US$ 6,010, the Ministers US$ 3,000 and the Deputy Ministers US$ 2,400."
In other news, Le Potentiel reports new clashes in the Bas Congo province pitting the police force and the supporters of a political and religious movement known as Bundu dia Kongo BDK. "6 people were killed: 5 supporters of the Bundu dia Kongo and 1 member of the intelligence service," reports Le Potentiel.

As a reminder, the paper highlights, "in January 2007, police force clashed with the same members of the Bundu dia Kongo sect leaving over one hundred dead in the four different squares of the Bas-Congo province, says MONUC investigation.".
