Press Review 23 May 2005

Today's papers mainly focus on the recent developments of Mbuji-Mayi events.
'Show of force between the Government and UDPS,' Le Potentiel writes, alluding to the aftermaths of the Mbuji-Mayi incidents. In this respect, the paper reports, 'Government officially held UDPS responsible for the unrest in the town of Mbuji-Mayi in Friday cabinet meeting.' The paper further says, 'the coming days are likely to be more eventful' for 'Mlc, Pprd, and Rcd/Klm might demand compensations from Udps for the damages.' Le Potentiel predicts, 'The situation in Mbuji-Mayi, notably the political consequences thereof risks having some unexpected negative impacts if not handled with responsibility.'

L'Observateur, for its part, headlines, 'Udps accused,' indicating, 'Government holds Udps responsible for the killing in Mbuji-Mayi.' The paper further stresses, 'Wanton violence never leads to democracy. Democracy can never be reached through seditious pamphlets nor violence, as if to do oneself justice when no injustice has been committed.'

Le Phare headlines, 'Mbuji-Mayi: the moment of truth' and indicates, 'Tshisekedi has rushed an vanguard team to the scene of the horror.' It also quotes UDPS Secretary-General as declaring, ' the purpose of the team's mission is to assess the extent of the damages done on their party's seat and to comfort the victims.'

On the other hand, Le Phare points out, ' President Kabila's Special Advisor, Samba Kaputo's presence in Mbuji-Mayi is prompted by the President's desire to know what actually happened.'

Le Palmarès, in turn, headlines, 'MONUC deploys peacekeepers to Mbuji-Mayi.' The paper quotes MONUC military spokesman as declaring, ' about forty Uruguayan peacekeepers are in Mbuji-Mayi as part of planned deployment several weeks earlier.'

La Référence Plus focuses on ' the consequences of an assessment of the transition stakeholders,' and writes, ' imbroglio in President Joseph Kabila's entourage.' Echoing President Kabila's Cabinet Director, the paper says, 'The assessment mentioned by the Head of State had nothing to do with the Vice-presidents' mandates;' and relaying the PPRD (President's party) Secretary-General, says, ' Each party is free to replace the members of its own component, especially the weary ones.'

Under the headline, ' the US position about the Transition Government,' Le Palmarès reports, 'according to Condoleeza Rice, USA disapproves the current Government and insists on having a government able to lead the political transition to the elections.' The paper further describes Karel De Gucht-Ramazani Baya meeting (respectively Belgian and Congolese Ministers of Foreign Affairs) today in Egmont palace, Belgium as the ' Truth Meeting.'
